Selfish Generosity – What Goes Around Comes Around
Selfish Generosity – now this is a strange term. It almost seems like a contradiction in terms. Not SO!
My mother taught me this term so long ago that even she has forgotten. I remember vividly the lesson about how is was worth the effort to find the “perfect” holiday gift for someone. Why? Selfish Generosity! The feeling YOU get when the person lights up like a searchlight. The feeling you get when they beam say “Wow How did you know? This is exactly what I wanted!” is worth the trip to 10 different stores. It is OKAY to be generous for selfish reasons. On the other hand, when you are greedy and take from others for selfish reasons, then you have crossed the line.
Selfish Generosity – the fine line
This topic came to mind today when some generosity came back in overwhelming abundance.
If I had been generous as a calculated ploy to generate payback, that would have been calculating and manipulative. I am NOT condoning or suggesting that in ANY way.
You have to figure out how you can give with no expectation (other than the general feeling that is expressed in the cliché “What goes around, comes around.”)
I get pleasure from helping people in online. A while back I was helping someone in a training group on Facebook.
This wax a Facebook group for team members who are part of an online marketing training system. We are an online mastermind group. It is not uncommon in the group for someone to ask something like “I have a new web page, can you give me your opinion?” and 30 team members chime in with opinions, observations, and valuable critiques. Try getting that at the office tomorrow!
Before I share how the boomerang for Selfish Generosity landed in my lap today, I’d like to share a video. I went Googling (love that verb) for Selfish Generosity and these folks have it down cold!
Selfish Generosity in Action
I will never forget one Christmas when I gave one of my brothers a pass to a golf tournament. It just happened to be Pass #1. The look on my brother’s face is embedded into my memory forever. Who won from that interaction? The obvious answer is that we both did. However I am certain that as much as he enjoyed going to the tournament, that experience faded with time. My joy at seeing him light up is a memory I have treasured for many years.
My POINT
Helping others in order to feel good is the act of a caring person. Everyone wins!
And – when you least expect it – “What Goes Around, Comes Around” The bad that
you do AND the good. It makes you realize that being selfish enough to do good things
is a good thing.
What about you?
Selfish Generosity is way outside my usual blog topics. I’d love to hear your thoughts!! So comment below.

Hi Hale, I can tell that you don’t give in order to get. You didn’t even ask me for a testimonial (but that would have been okay if you had!) This is such a lesson for all of us and you truly live it out. Bless you for your generosity.

Hi, Hale!
This is extremely true. I was remembering the scenes of the film “Pay it Forward” the whole time I was reading your post. Like the film, your post is equally beautiful. Cheers!

I haven’t a clue about why the RSS is faulty. I’ll take a look as soon as I can. Virtually all of my blog posts are sent to my email list too and that is where I concentrate my efforts. RSS seems to be a dying tehcnology. 🙂
