Free Images for Your Blog

Free Images for your blog is a hot topic for many bloggers.  Search Engine Optimization guidelines indicate that your posts will get higher ranking if they have at least one image (named with the key words you are working on).  Here are some sources for free images.

By the way – be careful when working with these sites.  Many of them route you to a site where you need to pay for the images.  They will show you some free images and them more images – all of which you need to pay for.

Where to Find Quality Free Images

Some of the best places to find stock free  images:

 1. Everystockphoto.com
This site describes itself as a “license-specific photo
search engine.” It searches many of the popular free
stock photo sources and allows you restrict results
based on a variety of parameters, including account
requirement, shape, resolution, and license.

 2. Flickr’s Creative Commons Search
This social image-sharing site has gained a reputation
for harboring high-quality free photos. Search through
the Creative Commons section or use the advanced search
feature to specify a search within the Creative Commons-
licensed content, plus you can identify whether you’re
looking for content that can be edited or used commercially.

 3. Stock.xchng  http://www.sxc.hu
There are plenty of images on this site with more lax licensing
that doesn’t require attribution. However, you’ve got to watch
out for the much higher quality, payment-requiring iStockphoto
thumbnails that get posted alongside the free stock.xchng results.

4. http://123rf.com
If you’re just looking for something small, stock photography site
123rf offers many of its small-sized (think 400px at the longest side)
images for free. Just search their free images section, found under
the Stock Photography header on the home page (or by clicking
their link above).

5. Google Creative Commons Image Search
Of course, if there’s a searching need, Google has a tool for it.
Within their existing image search, Google added a usage rights
parameter to their advanced image search. Here, you can specify
whether the image should carry a license that allows reuse,
commercial use, and/or modification.

6. http://rgbstock.com

The home page of the site tells you that this is a source for free
images for your website.

7.  http://morguefile.com
I have obtained files here in the past.  While writing this
the site gave a “500 Server Error”

8.  Search several Creative Commons Sites – is a great site.  It searches other sites and  return images from all of them.
http://search.creativecommons.org    (Flikr, Google, etc.)

9. http://Iconfinder.com
This is another site that searches several sites for you.

 10.  http://www.Fotolia.com
If you  change to to the largest size and change the
drop down to free use, you can find useable images here.

11.  http://stockvault.net/
StockVault.net – Free images from photographers around the world

12. http://www.kozzi.com/
Kozzi.com – One free photo per day

13. http://findicons.com/
FindIcons.com – Huge resource for avatars or small images   (also 150,000 images)

  1. Klara F. – a reader – sent me a note that she had found another site that offered some advantages:
After some exploring I found this other tool and I wanted to suggest you show it along that one.

https://www.websiteplanet.com/webtools/favicon-generator/ “  Thank you Klara

14. http://openclipart.org/
Open Clipart Libary – Public domain clipart (Thanks Sue Lyon-Jones for link in comments!)

15.  http://www.smashingmagazine.com/tag/freebies/
AWeber references them – they have lots of icons and sets of free website and social media images.

16. http://www.freedigitalphotos.net/
Seems to have a large selection of Royalty Free Images

Paid Images

For paid images instead of free images, I usually go to

http://123rf.com first – they have a good selection
and appear to be cheaper then others.  Other
favorites are http://dreamstime.com (note the plural)
and http://iStockphoto.com.  Their costs are reasonable and they
have millions of images.

(Note for blogs, the smallest images are fine!)

Here are a few other resources.

I’ll be adding new sites for free images as I run across them
