Blogging with a Purpose – not just floating around

All successful blogging depends upon first finding and refining your purpose.  Without an established direction you just cannot succeed.  There are several part to finding a good purpose.  For example:

• finding you niche,
• Finding your Unique Selling Proposition (USP),
• Finding your voice,
• Finding your product or service (to sell).

Regardless, you need to be blogging with a purpose.  This point is similar to another point I made recently where I urged bloggers to keep the main thing the main thing.

Blogging with a Purpose – A Story

Some years ago, I ran the Instructional Support Computer Services Department.  While I was there our University gained a national reputation for Local Area Networks.  We received several awards and a major company distributed a 10 page brochure about us to every University in the U.S.  After I left, my assistant took over.

A year later he and I met for dinner and a beer.  He told me: “Hale, you know I was in charge of fixing hardware and software connectivity issues.  Basically fighting fires.   I always resented the team of student assistants you had for developing Local Area Network software.   When I took over I disbanded the group and used their expertise for fighting fires.   I will say that we fought fires better during the last year than we ever did while you were here.”   He paused and then said: “On the other hand I look around one day and realized that we had no wake behind our boat.  We weren’t going anywhere and we had lost our national reputation as a leader. Now I wish I had left that group alone.”

I often remember this story and it motivates me to work toward a goal, even if I’m not sure that the current goal will be my long term goal.  In this case, I remind myself regularly that I must be blogging with a purpose.

What is Your Purpose?  Is There A Wake Behind YOU?

My point here is that you MUST be trying to do something – you must have a purpose.  It is pretty much a given that your purpose, your goals, you aspirations will change over time, but you must have a stated direction in order to generate a wake.

Short and Sweet – If you are a blogger, you need to be blogging with a purpose if you hope to succeed.
