Blog Traffic After You Press Publish

Blog Traffic After You Press Publish

Blog Traffic After You Press Publish

Blog Traffic is a critical part of blogging.  In an earlier post, “Sail the 7 Cs of Blogging”,  I gave an overview of seven different aspects of blogging.

In a series of seven posts (well it started as three – it is up to seven now) I am focusing on the last one – driving traffic to your blog. I’m starting at the back because I feel that this CRITICAL step is often overlooked.  (We all tend to skimp on the “last” step in order to mark a project as DONE.)

Creating blog traffic has four distinct phases –

  1. things you do before you write a post – covered in a post about Phase 1,
  2. things you do while you are writing a post – covered in a post about Phase 2,
  3. things you do after you write a post and press Publish and
  4. checking the results on your efforts. This post is part 3 of 7 on blog traffic and starts to cover the third phase.   Owners of regular websites usually think of this as Off Page SEO.  Many bloggers don’t think about it at all

Caveat – there are lots of opinions and lots of research on this topic.  I’m giving you the best that I know.  Parts of it will probably be out of date before it is even published.

After you Press Publish – BLOG TRAFFIC PHASE 3

In the post about the first phase, I made the point that when you are trying to drive blog traffic, you need to look at both the rules used by the search engines to end up on the first page when people search for your keywords – Search Engine Optimization (SEO) AND  how the readers react to your writing.  This is often called Human Optimized Content (HOC).  So, to optimize for Blog Traffic you need write for SEO AND HOC.

You would think that after your Publish your post the rest would be SEO.  Nothing could be further from the truth.

You still need to write copy that appeals to people.  We are going to do that in places that Google thinks are important, but we are still talking to people so that they will be intrigued and click on a link and read your post.

Two Kinds of Traffic

When I talked about considerations while writing your post, I discussed two different sets of criteria that you needed to balance. – the search engines (SEO) and the readers (Copywriting and HOC).) These same sets of criteria are still important.

The Purpose of Blog Traffic is to SELL SOMETHING

We need to remember that the bottom line is that we are trying to sell something.  It might be a product, or membership in a group, but at some point we want people to sign up for a sale.

Here is a schematic that covers a lots of the ways people can arrive at your point of sale.   The lower case letters talk about a traffic source and the UPPER CASE letters describe the source.   Note that in the lower left corner we have things we do to drive traffic to our blog, where they can buy or sign up for our email list.  Arriving at a sale through a blog is a multi-step process.   Many of the other sources are single step processes or at most two steps.

Internet Marketing- Objective is Sales

At Some Point A Reader Must Click

Everyone who reads your blog had to click on a link somewhere.   Here are the major sources:

  • Search Engines Result Pages (Organic Traffic)
  • Links that you paid for (Banner Ads, Absence, Solo Ads, paid Press Releases, etc.)
  • Links you did not pay for (Social Media, Viral Social Media, email blasts to your list, links on your signature, Articles, Links in forums, Free Press Releases, etc.)

The Obvious:  The More Quality Places Your Link Appears –
The More Traffic You Will Have

What people call Organic Traffic is where people search using Google, Bing, Yahoo and other engines.
You would like your posts to place very high on the pages that Google renders when people search
on your keywords. The trick is how to beat out the competition so that your rank well. The rules change
constantly as people learn how to trick Google and Google in turn learns how to identify and punish
the tricksters.

We aren’t going to talk about tricks in this blog.

Readers coming from Search Engines are the second best traffic you can get.

Some of you may be asking: “What is the best source?”   Customers who have already bought
from you are the BEST traffic you can get.  They can come in from any of the links, but on of the most reliable sources is people who click on a link in an email blast you sent to your list.  This is why marketers say “The fortune is in the List.”

Back to readers who came from Search Engines.  They are actively searching for the topic you wrote about.  They must want SOMETHING or they wouldn’t be searching.

For a long time now Google used the basic premise that if other websites are referring to your post, you must have said something worthwhile and therefore you must be a useful site to show to their customers – the searchers.  These references from other sites are called backlinks – they link back to your site.  (Actually to one page on your site.  Google treats each page more or less independently.)

Different kinds of websites are rated by Google. Links from some sites are considered VERY
valuable and others are considered VERY bad and Google will actually lower your rank.

Beware of Dated Information

As part of this research, I found bloggers recommending tactics that were VERY out of date.  For example I saw recommendations that you use HTML to update the Meta Data, others extolling the absolute power of eZines. some talking about how much Google loved links from forums, and many talking about using Fiverr.com to get links from Link Wheels and Link Pyramids.   Yikes!   The metadata suggestion is at least  10 years out of date.  The Fiverr.com suggestion is only 6 months out of date and will HURT your rankings.  EZines and Forums have been very devalued.   My point is that you can’t take anything as absolute.  The rules do change.

Tomorrow – Where Do You Want To Place Links?

Rather than trying to summarize the Blog Traffic Industry, tomorrow I’m going to let some Top Bloggers tell you their strategies.

THAT CONCLUDES the first part of Blog Traffic Phase 3 – After You Press Publish

Until next time, you have a Great Day!

  1. Quite interesting topic, many thanks for posting.

  2. My coder is trying to convince me to move to .net from PHP. I have always disliked the idea because of the costs. But he’s tryiong none the less. I’ve been using Movable-type on numerous websites for about a year and am nervous about switching to another platform. I have heard fantastic things about blogengine.net. Is there a way I can transfer all my wordpress content into it? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    • PHP is a language. .net is a subdomain (like .com). So I think things are a little confused. There are several ways to import things into a WordPress blog. Even if you can’t find an automatic way you can hire someone from a site liek fiverr.com who will do it for very little $$$.

      Regards,
      Hale

  3. Relaxing on the beach with hubby. Home in both cities where my son’s live.

  4. With havin so much written content do you ever
run into any issues of plagorism or copyright infringement?
My blog has a lot of completely unique content I’ve either created myself or outsourced but it seems a lot of it
is popping it up all over the internet without my permission.
Do you know any ways to help reduce content from being stolen?

    I’d certainly appreciate it.

    • I don’t run into plagiarism problems, but I know that others do. When then link back to up it is good for your web site, it is good for you – both your reputation and with Google. When they just steal, it is bad. As far as I know, legal action is your only recourse.

      Regards,
      Dr. Hale
