Overwhelm is a Sneaky Problem – Here are some tips on Conquering Overwhelm
- The foundation managing overwhelm is to accept what is and take it from there. Don’t look back, you’re not going in that direction. Stop fretting about how you got here. Focus on how you are going to move forward.
- Break the pattern. Move to a different part of the house to think or take a drive or go sit in a restaurant or visit a park or find a sunset. One of the keys to conquering overwhelm is to see things differently. You will see things differently when you are in different environments.
- Clean something. When everything inside is churning with anxiety over multiple commitments, create order outside.
- Use every means available. Make plans and act spontaneously. Make lists and do what needs to be done whether or not it is on the list. Managing overwhelm means mingling both direct and indirect ways of moving forward.
- Take your list and ruthlessly chop everything that can “wait.” Prioritize into “Must do,” “Should do,” and “It would be nice to do.” Categories 2 and 3 go in a drawer. It they haven’t come out of the drawer in a month – see if you can ditch them completely.
- Revise your commitments. Promises are not made to be broken, but some are made to be revised. Act promptly to revise commitments that you cannot or will not keep.
- Figure out the “Worst that could happen” Then ask yourself – “Can I handle that?” The answer is almost always YES. Knowing the worst is a lot better than fretting over some undefined mysterious future.
- First things first. Take time for exercise, prayer, meditation, and simply “defragging” no matter how busy you are. Doing these things first each day enlivens you and gives you the resilience and resourcefulness to do your best.
- Read Escape Fiction – a good book that your can “get into,” I mean you feel like you are there, can be a great stress reliever. It helps you get your focus back.
- Breathe. First, last, and always, let a rising bubble of anxiety be your reminder to breathe.
Note everything on this list will work for you. Find the ones that do and you will be on your way to conquering overwhelm and living for tomorrow.
Until next time, you have a Great Day!
