Does Your Online Presence Reflect YOU?

Are people seeing what you think they are
seeing?

Sometimes it is easy to forget that the world
has changed.  Smartphones, Google, Facebook
these aren’t incremental changes, they are
fundamental and radical shifts in our world
view.

Are you stuck in the 1990’s???

Your Online Presence Is Critical

Go ahead – Google your name.   What comes up?

Does it portray the real you?

Does it portray what you want your customers or potential
business partners to see?

People Will Google You Before They Do Business With You.

At one time there was no such thing as an “online image.”  Even after online marketers started to have an image, it wasn’t easy to get a handle on what that image was.  Today your customer can Google a name and look at your total online image on their telephone.

You really need to change with the times.

Let me give you a couple of examples of being out of touch:

  • A friend of mine was interviewing a young man and Googled his name.  The first page up was hist arrest photo.  He didn’t get the job 🙂
  • I read a story in a major publication about the consultants in India pricing themselves out of the market.  Of course the time line went out 30 years.  We have trouble predicting 6 months out, much less THIRTY YEARS.
  • An article yesterday talked about how the data showed that Social Media sites lasted 11 years on the average and Facebook only had four years to go.  This is like using data on the average fluctuation of local tides to predict the severity of a Tsunami.  The average data just doesn’t apply when there are radical changes happening.

If you are a professional and the Internet is important to your business, you need to take a few simple steps.  Remember People WILL Google your name!

Be On All The Major Social Media Platforms

Please notice I did NOT SAY “Be Active” on all of these platforms.  You just need a profile.

Step 1.   Understand your business and your target audience.  Develop a tag line and a title that describes you.

Step 2.  Get a good, smiling head shot. Professional photographs are best, but others will do: If they portray you well!  (People need to be able to recognize you from this image.)

Step 3. Spend some times creating a decent profile on each of these sites.  Try to get your name as part of your URL on each of these sites.  For example http://Facebook.com/yourname

  • Facebook (A Business Page would be nice, but not necessary)
  • LinkedIn – the site for Professionals
  • Twitter – The best marketing search engine in the World
  • YouTube – the home of videos
  • Google Plus – who knows it may come of age
  • Pinterest – The hottest thing out there right now
  • Gravatar.com – Makes your picture appear when you comment on sites.
  • Your Website.

Step 4.  Make darn sure that Nothing Goes on the Web that will hurt you,
your family or your business.  The stories are true – frat party pictures
can wreak havoc on your life ten years after the fact.

That’s it.  You need to develop a solid foundation for your professional online presence.

Now try Googling your name.  The difference in your online presence will be very noticeable to you AND the people you do business with.

Today – Your Online Presence is Critical – Take Care Of It.
