Firefox tips - Saving Time with Pinned TabsFirefox tips on Saving Time:  Firefox is the browser of choice for many people, but there are many features that the average user doesn’t know about and hence they don’t use.   You may not want to use all of these, but there are sure to be a few that you would find useful.

Firefox Tips: Tip #1 -Restore Your Windows

I find that there are several web sites I open on a regular basis.  Sites like Hale-Shop.com, Gmail, Facebook, the backoffice for the Daily Marketing Coach program, Google Plus, LinkeIn, My Blog, AWeber, 123RF.com (a stock image site) and Remember the Milk (a Todo List site).   It takes time to open each of these windows so I have FireFox do it for me.

Step 1 – Tell Firefox to restore the windows I had open when I quit the last session

You click on the Firefox image in the upper left corner and choose Options

Firefox Options Menu Firefox tips - options menu

#1 – Click on the little arrow on the right side of the orange Firebox

#2 – Click on Options

#3 – Click on Options again

I have the Menu Toolbar off (to make more space for text in the browser).   If yours is on, the screen will look like this.

#2 – Click on Options

Here is the screen that opens up.

#1- Make sure the General Tab is highlighted

#2 – Choose “Show my windows and tabs from last time” from the drop down menu that tells Firefox what to do when Firefox starts.

Firefox Tips: Tip #2 – Pin Selected Tabs

Enter the URLs for the various  windows that you usually open.  You click click on the little plus sign beside the current right-most tab or press Alt-T top open new tabs.

Right Click tabs for sites that you use regularly and choose the “Pin Tab” option.  That will take the long tab and make it small.  You can still see the name of each tab by hovering the mouse cursor over the tab you are interested in.

#1 – Right Click on the Tab you want to pin

#2 – Choose the Pin Tab option

You can see that there are already several small tabs to the left of “Remember the Milk”.  These tabs have already been pinned.

Firefox Tips: Tip #3 – Restore My Default Tabs When Firefox Has Problems

Occasionally Firefox will not open the tabs the way I want it to.  Usually this happens when I close windows prior to shutting my computer down (which I rarely do).  Firefox will restore the last window I closed.  If this wasn’t my main window then I don’t have my Pinned Tabs when Firefox starts.   I will also see this problem (rarely) when my computer crashes or Firefox sends an update.

Here is what I do to recover from that.

Step #1 – Create a special folder for standard windows.  I call mine Hale’s Defaults.

Step #2 – Bookmark each of your standard windows and put them in your “defaults” folder

Step #3 – When you need them, tell Firefox to restore all of the sites in the “defaults” folder

Step #4 – Manually Pin each of the tabs that open.

Step #1 – Create Your Default Folder

Step 1a – Create a Defaults Bookmark Folder

Tomorrow we’ll cover several more time saving tips that you can use when with Firefox.
