Saving Time – Speed Up Videos – Eight Time Saving Tips

Please Comment

Saving Time – we all look for ways to do it.  I’ve written a couple of posts recently on the topic.  One I talked about using Pinned Tabs in Firefox.  (That also works in Chrome now.)

Another post on Saving Time talked about using Lastpass for automatically saving and retrieving passwords. (Read about Lastpass.)

If you are like me, you use your computer and your iPad and your smart phone constantly.  You’ve probably done something else that I’ve done.  You’ve tried to hammer a nail with the handy pair of pliers or the end of a screwdriver.  It doesn’t take long to realize that the right tool can make a world of difference.

Here are some tools that I use regularly.  There may be better tools out there, but I haven’t found them and until I do these work for me.  Yeah, I keep my eyes open all the time for better tools.

Saving Time – Tip #1 – Speed Up Videos – Method 1

Note: You can’t speed uo a live webinar or Facebook Live, but it works well enough that I regularly skip the live session and watch the replay if I don’t think there is going to be a lot of interaction during the live session.

Some videos are shown to you using a format called HTML5.    There is almost always a gear icon in the lower left of the screen.  You can click on that and if you see an option called SPEED, you can speed the video up (or slow is down to take notes}.   Remember you can speed it up faster than you can listen to skip over sections you don’t want to watch (like “Tell me where you are watching from?  I see Alaska…” or “Let me give you some background” when you have heard that segment many times.

Saving Time – Tip #2 – Speed Up Videos – Method 2

Enounce MySpeed – from enounce.com  Buy Enounce MySpeed Here   (Yes that is an affiliate link)

Enounce works on PCs and Macs.  It costs a little less than $30 and it is worth every penny!

Enounce.com Home Page

Here is a quote from their website “While it’s great to learn when and where you want by simply launching an Internet browser, the pace is all wrong. The average reader digests 200-250 words per minute, but e-learning videos tend to move at the speed of speech: just 100-125 words per minute. Students are locked in to a speed that is often too slow for their learning capacity.”

How does it work?

When you start to play a video, a small screen appears  (It is possible that you will need to launch it, but I don’t ever need to do that except when I want to show people the slider screen on Webinars.)

A small screen will appear with a slider.

Enounce MySpeed Slider

#1 – This is the icon on my desktop.   For Mac users it is a small icon at the top of their window.

#2 –  This is the slider bar.  Just drag the slider to the speed you want.  The Time section over on the right shows that I have saved over 260 hours on this PC alone  (I have another 30 or so on my laptop.  Note:  I have a lot, but I don’t believe these numbers 🙂 )

I know that I watch a lot of videos, but giving me 260 hours of my life back for $30 seems like the best bargain I’ve ever taken advantage of.

Currently if you are using Chrome, you need to start MySpeed before you open Chrome.  Here is an article about it,  Launching Chrome and MySpeed Article

Here is how I do it;   After you install MySpeed, there will be an icon on your desktop with a Chrome icon and the Title “MySpeed Chrome Launcher;   I Right Click that and choose the PIN TO TASKBARD option.

Now there will be a Chrome icon in my Taskbar all the time.  I launch Chrome by clicking that icon.

(Yes, I moved my taskbar to the right side of my screen. We have more left / right real estate on our screens than we do up / down real estate.)

BTW the application lowers the pitch of the speakers as you speed the video up.  You don’t the the chipmunk/Donald Duck squeaky voice sound.

Saving Time – Tip #1 – Speed Up Videos – Method 3

Sometimes neither of these work.   There is a third option and that is a Chrome Extension.   I use the one called “Video Speed Controller – With Hot Keys”.   It is important to choose the one that says “With Hot Keys”.   The other may workm but they didn’t for me.  This one does

The icon at the top of your browser looks like a car speedometer.  If you click on it you will see this screen that reminds you what the hotkeys are.

I use all three of these and save a BUNCH of time.

Saving Time Tip #4 – Swift by Taparatus for IPad and IPhone

Swift costs less than $3 does the same thing on an IPad.  It will only go to twice the speed of the original and doesn’t record your time saving, but it works very well.

Saving Time - Swift on IPad

NOTE:  Swift shows you how to put a little Javascript code in your bookmarks.  You can call this “View with Swift” when you start a video in a browser like Safari you can click on the bookmark and your IPad will change over to the Swift viewer.  However you can open Swift from your IPad applications screen.  When you do, it defaults to a library of saved vidoes, however there is a small world button in the upper right corner.  You can click on this button and Swift is a full browser in it’s own right.  You can navigate to the site you want, login (if required) and start the video you want to watch.

I use this while exercising on my indoor bike. I’m definitely getting double value out of the exercise time.

Other Speed Ups

I have not used it, but I understand that the Dice player works well for Android phones and tablets.

YouTube has a way to speed up their videos – go to http://www.youtube.com/html5 and sign up for the LABS trial.  This will convert you over to the HTML5 viewer which has a speed up option built in.

Saving Time – Tip #5 – Speed Up Video on Hard Disk

There is also a free video viewer called VLC.  It can speed up or slow down videos that you have downloaded to your computer.   Just Google for VLC and download it.  You made need to edit the configuration to add the speed controls to the easy to see menu of controls.

Saving Time – Tip #6 – Screenpresso Captures Your Screen

Screenpresso is screen capture software.  I do a lot of training (like this blog post) where I capture portions of a screen, annotate them, blur parts of them, put text on them, etc.  Being able to annotate the captures without bringing up an image editor like Photoshop is a real time-saver.  Screenpresso will also covert the text you captured as an image into text you can edit.  THis is another great time saver.  Here is an article on ScreenPresso.   (View Article on Screenpresso)_

Saving Time – Tip #7 – Using Skype to Make Phone Call.

You might wonder why I’m including Skype.  I’ve got a couple of reasons.

First, the $60 a year upgrade allows me to hold video conferences with several people.  Being about to see the person you are talking to is huge!

Second, I find making phone calls at my desk is difficult.  I’ve done computer work at my desk for so long that anything that isn’t computer work tends to make me edgy and my fingers start reaching for the keyboard.

Again the $60 upgrade allows me to make unlimited calls anywhere in the US and Canada.  I even made a setting’s modification that tells people’s called ID that the phone that is calling is my cell phone.

I can copy and paste numbers into the Skype call box and made the calls.  It is using the computer so my feeling of needing to work at the computer is satisfied.

The copy and pasting of number is great. Sometimes I use Google’s dialing system if people are in my contacts list.

Saving Time – Tip #8 – Evernotes

I’m not going into a full course on Evernotes, but I will mention three things:

  1. It syncs my desktop and my mobile devices
  2. It has great screen/website capture ability
  3. It makes a good place to store my internet marketing details – things like links to the squeeze page for an eBook, and the link to the download, and the link to the Thank You Page – etc.

There you have 7 tips on Saving Time as you work.

Until next time, you have a Great Day!  Oh Hale Yes!  🙂

  1. Hi Hale,
Great info in your article. I use all of these except for Preso. It looks neat although I use Skitch mostly for these functions and it syncs directly with Evernote which is my go to saving time resource.

Preso seems to have more features but I probably won’t try it. I like the simplicity I get with the Evernote integration. However I was wondering if preso works for both Mac and PC. I know the other 3 tools you recommended do.
