How To Find Good Blogs to Comment On

Finding Blogs to Comment On

Finding Blogs to Comment On

If you are a blogger, you know that one way to attract people to your blog is to comment of other blogs.  The trick is to find blogs to comment on.  Not just any blogs, but appropriate blogs.   It would also be nice if the blogs had a high Page Rank which would mean that Google gives you more SEO credit for the link back to your blog.

Before I get into how to find blogs to comment on, let’s look at the benefits of commenting on blogs.

  • A backlink to your blog or a post on your blog (this is one of the ways that Google “rates” your blog entries.)
  • Brings you to the attention of the movers and shakers
  • Puts you in front of people who are in your niche and some will find value in your material, resonate with you and opt in to your offer.

EFFECTIVE COMMENTING

I recently did some research and wrote a post on Effective Commenting on blogs.   I found that I had been missing the boat in several ways.  I think that it is appropriate to summarize some of that here.

When I comment on blogs, is usually see three fields that I need to fill in.  After researching some, I found that I wasn’t being as effective as I could be in how I answered  two out of the three.

  • Name:   I was entering “Hale”.  What I realized was that this become the anchor text for a link.  Rather than entering Hale or John, I think it is better to use my full name: Hale Pringle.   I read one person who is named “John Sullivan.”  In Ireland, this is roughly the same as “John Smith.”  After commenting for a while, Google made his blog the number one item returned when people searched for “John Sullivan.”   If he had been entering “John”, this would not have happened.   Google has indicated that they would prefer the anchor text vary and not always be exactly the same.  For me the exception is my name.
  • Email Address: I got that one right!
  • Website:   I had been entering http://HalePringle.com.   That was okay, but it generated another link to my home page.   I found that it was better to enter a link to my most current blog post.  Google ranks each page separately.  My home page probably doesn’t need another link.  My most current post does need links, so why not give the link to a post.  The only exception is if you see the blog is using a plugin called CommentLuv.  In that case the Website field should be my domain and CommentLuv will create a second link to one of my posts.

FINDING BLOGS TO COMMENT ON

We are going to use Google to find good blogs to comment on.  By “good” I mean blogs that are relevant to my niche and preferably ones that have high value to Google.  (We usually use a metric called “Page Rank” (PR) for this.   Many beginning sites are PR0.   Heavily trafficked and trusted sites like Google and YouTube are ranked as 10 or PR10.

DETERMINING THE PAGE RANK FOR DIFFERENT SITES.

The first thing I recommend is that you use FireFox or Chrome, Opera or Safari and add the addon called SEOQuake.   You can download these at http://SEOQuake.com.    SEOQuake adds a line after every entry on your search page.  This line gives you information about how authoritative the site is.  It also gives you information on what it would take to compete with each entry when you search for key words that you would like to rank on.

SEOQuake - See Page Rank in Google

In this case I am looking for .EDU sites (educational sites).  When I scroll down the page I found some PR4 sites that I could comment on.

SPECIAL SEARCHES TO FIND BLOGS TO COMMENT ON

Now lets look at some special searches.  There are people who turn this into a science and there are a number of paid products that go into this material in great detail.  I’m going to give you some basic information so that you can get started.   If you want to just copy and paste, you can skip the next section.

ADVANCED GOOGLE

There are a number of parameters available in Google that most of us never use.  In this case, we’re gonna need them so let’s look at a few:

  • AllInTitle:  (words you would like to see in the title).  For example allintitle:blogging tips  Will give you search results with the words “blogging” and “Tips” in the title for each entry.
  • AllInURL: (words you would like to see in the URL):  For example AllInURL:blog tips will show websites and files with the words “blog” and “tips” in them.  Note: that URL does NOT refer to just websites like  www.example.com , it also refers to files like www.example.com/index.html
  • Filetype: (doc or pdf or zip or other file types)
  • InTitle: (one word you want in the title)   For example: intitle: Sieg will show pages with the word sieg in the title.  Instead of “Ann Sieg” sites, you will see lots of German sites.  If we change that to AllInTitle: Ann Sieg, we see entries with Ann Sieg in their title.
  • Site: (URL)  (words to search for )   Example site:HalePringle.com  overwhelm  will find all instances of the word “overwhelm”  in my website.
  • Intext: (words you want)  They words can be anywhere in the text of the pages, not just the Title or URL)
  • InURL: (One word you want in the url)  For Example inurl:blogging will show you URLs and blog posts that have the word “Blogging” in the URL.
  • – (minus sign) – Do not return results with this word
  • “ “ (quotes) – return on sites with exactly these words in exactly this order.  If you don’t add quotes, Google will return results with have both words in any order and anywhere on a page.  Once it is finished with those, it will return pages with some of the words and then with just one of the words.  That is why you get millions of returns for many searches.
  • + (plus sign) – words that MUST be in the result
  • ~ (approximate) – include synonyms   For example blogging ~tips  and your get blogging tips, blogging help, blogging advice and more.
  • As_qdr  After you have searched, add the following after the long string that is now in your address bar  &as_qdr=d for posts done in the last day.  & &as_qdr=d2 for two days, &as_qdr=w for the last week, &as_qdr=m for the last month and m2 or m6 for the last two months or the last six months.

A lot of this can be done with Google’s advanced search, but not all of it.

PUTTING THE PIECES TOGETHER

With all of these tools, let’s go looking for blogs to comment on.  🙂

Here are some examples:

  • Keyword or keywords site:.edu -captcha -nofollow “leave a comment”  (this will target educational sites with your keywords that do not require you to solve a CAPTCHA riddle, do NOT have “nofollow” links and DO have the words “Leave a Comment”.  If you look at the SEOQuake line, you will see that many of the EDU sites have a high page rank.  Those are the ones you are most interested it.   (BTW, don’t comment on only “nofollow” pages, that looks unnatural and Google could penalize you for it.     Change the “.edu” to “.gov” and you will get government sites.   Again, many of these have a high Page Rank.   The image above contains an example of this search.
  • Keyword or keywords site:.edu comment –“You must be logged in” –“posting closed” –“comments closed”
  • Keywords site:.edu  inurl:wordpress +”leave a comment”
  • Keywords inurl:blog or inurl:forum or inurl:articles

You can add the &as_qdr=x described above to limit your search to very recent posts.  You can also use the other advanced Google search operators described above like using the “~” to search for synonyms of your keywords.

Of course, once you find something you like, bookmark it so you don’t have to “find” it again.

If you Google, you will find a number of articles on this topic.
