5 Reasons to Concentrate on One Main Autoresponder List

One Main Autoresponder ListAWeber Tips – Why do you want to have one main autoresponder list?  This question doesn’t usually come up until it is too late to turn back around and focus on one list.  Before you fall into that trap, let’s look at the pros and cons.

When you are building your lists it is tempting to have a number of small lists and just use the checkboxes to include a number of lists when you send broadcast emails.  In this post we will look at five reasons to focus on one main autoresponder list.

Here are my five main reasons for suggesting that you have one main autoresponder list for each marketing funnel.

  1. If you have one main autoresponder list with your follow-up sequence, you have one place to fix typos and rework emails.
  2. If you have one main autoresponder list, it is easier to add follow-up emails in the middle of your sequence.
  3. AWeber allows you to create multiple Broadcast emails and split test them, but only for one list.
  4. AWeber allows you to create a broadcast that goes to only people who did NOT open a previous broadcast.  You should do this for one list only.
  5. Some of the main reports are more descriptive if they show you a large part of your subscribers at one time.

Now let’s look at these in more detail.

#1 – One Main Autoresponder List  to Fix Typos and Rework Emails.

You are going to find typos and paragraphs that you don’t like when you read over them.  You are going to want to add another feature or bonus to an email in your list.  You can’t avoid it.  If you have the same follow-up sequence in several small lists it become a night-mare to coordinate all the edits.

#2 – One Main Autoresponder List  to Insert Emails in the Middle of Your Follow-up Sequence.

When you want to insert emails in the middle of an existing sequence, you are going to need to contact AWeber support and ask them to make bulk changes to your list.  Having one main autoresponder list reduces your time and effort and theirs.

Okay, I heard that!  Someone asked “Why?” 🙂

Lets say you have 5 emails in your sequence and you want to add one after the 4th email.   The new one will become number 5 and the old number 5 will become number six.   AWeber will look at all of your subscribers who had read number 5 and see that there is a number 6 that they haven’t read.   AWeber will send the new number 6 out ASAP.   The problem is that many of your subscribers have already seen that email.  They saw it when it was the old number 5.   As a general rule you don’t want to send people exactly the same email.

#3 – One Main Autoresponder List – Split Testing

There will be many times that you wonder which of two or three ways of saying the same thing works best.   The tried-and-true way to find out is to randomly send half of your list one very and half of your list the other version.  You can test more than two version, but most people shouldn’t.

AWeber will let you send a split test pair of emails, with two caveats.  First you must have more than 100 subscribers in one list and second, you can only split test within one list.

Now you might say “Well I’ll split test my biggest list and send one of the emails to my other lists.”  There are two things wrong with that.  First, the list you choose to split test, may be different from your other lists.  You may have collected younger subscribers or single moms or some other group that doesn’t represent your total subscriber base well.   Second, and just as important, AWeber automatically removes duplicates when you send broadcasts to several lists at the same time.    Since you will usually have some people on more than one of your lists, it is important that your broadcast to all the relevant lists at one time.  As  soon as your send to one group in one broadcast and another group in a second broadcast, some people are going to get your email twice.

#4 – One Main Autoresponder List  – Sending A Broadcast to Subscribers Who Did NOT Open a Previous Send

A very powerful way to just about double the total number of opt-ins when you send a time-sensitive broadcast email is to resend the email to those who didn’t open the first time you send it.

AWeber makes it easy to do this.  (You do need to save the original email as a template if you don’t want to retype it or cut and paste it).  When you click on the Sent Broadcast link for a particular broadcast, AWeber will show you a list of all the people who opened the email.  There is a button to show you all the people who did NOT open the email.  At the bottom of the screen there is a green button that sends a broadcast to just these subscribers.  You click on that button, duplicate the original post (I like to put “Resend” in the title, and schedule the broadcast.  Usually if you get something like 20% opens  for the first sending, you will get about the same percentage for the second sending.  Here is a post about “Doubling Your Opt-ins For Broadcast Emails“.  This post goes into more detail and shows you screen shots.

#5 – One Main Autoresponder List  – Reports are More Useful When They Include More Subscribers

If you are regularly sending broadcasts or very similar follow-up emails to several small lists, then the reports will show you one list at a time.  It is often hard to get an overall picture of your list this way.

BTW – a useful tip.  Click on a broadcast that has been sent.  Down at the bottom there will be a screen that says “Download as CSV”.   You can click on that button open the file that AWeber downloads in Excel or another spreadsheet program.  You will find a number of interesting columns in the spreadsheet.  There are reports on a number of the columns, but somethings are easier to see in a list.  For example, AWeber automatically collects the approximate city, state and country of people subscribing to your list.  They use the IP address of the computer the user used to subscribe to your list.

For example, if you are making calls, it is easy to find the people on the West Coast.  This allows you to call later from the East Coast since it is still early in California or Oregon.
