AWeber Tips – Discover Email Templates (6/5/13 AWeber Revisions)

Email Templates - AWeber AWeber Tips are one of my favorite topics.  Today we will talk about using email templates.  This post uses the look and feel that AWeber released on June 5th, 2013.

Email Templates help you with your branding efforts and branding should be one of your main focuses.  You should be trying to build a good relationship with the subscribers on your lists.  The first step in building a relationship is for them to recognize you when they see you.  You should have a consistent look and feel on your websites, on your social media pages AND your emails.

You can save a lot of time and energy if you take some time once and create a powerful template and then use it every time you send out an email.

In this short video I will show you how to create, edit, delete and use simple email templates in AWeber.

Create Email Templates

When you decide to create email templates, the first thing you need to do is decide what you want in your template.  Below is an image of what I call a full email template.

Full Email Templates
Full Email Template

Here are the elements that you can decide to include or not include in YOUR email templates.

  1. Your Logo or Header (branding)
  2. Personalization – Dear {firstname}
  3. View in Browser (only available for Broadcast emails, not your follow-up sequence emails)
  4. Your Profile Picture (the same one you use for Social Media sites – branding)
  5. Your Signature block (more branding)
  6. Contact info that you want to share
  7. Follow Me Buttons for Facebook and Twitter
  8. Share This Material buttons for several Social Media sites.
  9. A P.S. paragraph (P.S.’s are the second most read area in emails.  Use that fact.)

A simple email template might look like this.

This template has just personalization, an image and a P.S.

Create Email Templates

I like to start in the Email Follow-up editor.  (Click on the “Messages” Tab –> “Follow Up Series”)

Start to Create an Email TemplateEmail Template - Start with Follow Up Editor

  1. Be sure to pick the “list” you want to be working on.
  2. Click on “Messages” –> “Follow Up Series”
  3. If you have some email for that list already, they will show here.  (If you don’t there is a special screen for “Create your First Email”)
  4. Click on the Green “Create a Follow Up” button.

Email Templates – Start with an AWeber Template

  1. Always check that your are working on the right list.
  2. The images near the top named “Design” and “Setting” are actually tabs.  They don’t look like it, but they are.
  3. The “Template” button is a toggle.
  4. In this mode, it has two tabs under it “Categories” and “My Template”.  If you click it, the sample templates running down the right side disappear and the drag and drop editor icons appear.
  5. Under some of the templates there are color-pair buttons.  Click on these to change the color of the template.
  6. You can search for a template if you know the name.

Pick a template you would like to start with by clicking on it (you will see a preview in the main edit area, kind of greyed out.)  If there is material in the main edit area that doesn’t change try clicking on the “Keep My Messages Content” toggle that is right under the Categories Button.

Once you have the template you like, click on the APPLY button (not shown) that is right under the sample template images running down the right side of the page.   Once you do, the Template button will be automatically toggled and you will be in the main editor.

Main Editor for Creating Email Templates

  1. The Template Button has been toggled and the main editor screen appears.
  2. In this image I have already dragged the “Image” icon to position 3.
  3. While I was dragging the “Image” icon a box of asterisks appeared showing me where I could drop the Icon.
  4. I can Upload a new Image or
  5. Use an Image I uploaded earlier
  6. People like to click on images.  Be sure include a URL that will send them where you want them to go.
  7. ALWAYS include “Alt Text” information.  If a person is viewing you site with images turned off or if they are blind and using a reader that vocalizes the page, the ALT Test is used.  (Google really like Alt Text and you have your key work in the Alt Text.)
  8. You can choose to have the image on the left (with text beside it on the right), or centered (on lines by itself) of on the right (with text to the left).  I have chosen the “on the right” button here.
  9. There is a “Apply” button just below the #8.  It is not shown in the image above.

Edit Your Email Templates

Just edit the template like you would any follow up email.  In this case you will put your “standard” stuff in first so that you can save the email as a template.

Save Your Email Templates

When you are ready to save your email templates, click on the “Template” Button, then click on “My Templates”

Save Your Email Templates
Save Your Email Template

  1. Be sure to leave the default Subject Line.   Later if you forget to enter a subject line it will show as an error when you save your email.   At the very worst you will send out an email with “Enter Your Subject Line Here” which is better (IMHO) than sending out an email with a subject line for a completely different topic.
  2. We clicked on the “Template” Button
  3. Then we clicked on “My Templates”
  4. The Text box with “Name Your Template” and a green “Save as Template” button appears.

Fill in a name for your template and then press the “Save as Template” button.  The new email template will appear on the right side of the screen.

NOTE:  I like to put the word “followup” in the template name.  Then I add the link for “(View in a Browser)”  and save it again with the word “Broadcast” in the name.  Broadcast emails can be viewed in a browser and follow up email cannot be viewed in a browser.   (BTW the code to put in the URL like is “{!url_archive}” – without the quotes.

Use Your Email Templates

To use your email templates you simply start a new email  by clicking on “Messages” –> “Follow Up Series”  or “Messages” –> “Broadcast”

Here are the steps to use your email templates

As always – double check that you are working on the right list.

  1. Click on “Messages” –> “Follow Up Series”
(I left out an intermediate screen where you click on the big Green Button to “Create a New Email”)
  2. Click on the “Templates” button
  3. Click on the “My Templates” tab button
  4. Click on the template you want
  5. Click on the “Apply Button”

That will toggle the “Templates” button and you will be in the Drag and Drop Editor.

Once you are in the Drag and Drop Editor, you create your email (or paste the text in).

Edit, Delete or Make Fancy Edits on Your Email Templates

Click on “Messages” –> “Email Template Manager”

Edit, Delete and Fancy Edit Email Templates
Delete or Edit an Email Template

  1. Click on “Messages”
  2. Click on “Email Template Manager”
  3. You will see a list of templates
  4. The red X can be used to delete a template

NOTE:  If you click on a template here (shown in #3 above) you will be taken to an editor screen.  Unlike the normal editor screen this screen also lets you edit the HTML behind your template.  This is pretty advanced stuff, but it is nice that you can do it.)

The video and the text have shown you how to 1) Create email templates, 2) Use email templates and 3) Delete or fancy edit email templates.  It is really very simple once you have done it once or twice.
