9 Ways That Readers Respond to Your Blog

Readers Respond to Your Blog

Readers Respond to Your Blog

I was doing some research today and in CopyBlogger I found a reference to a post about the different ways readers respond to your blog posts.   The thought that has gone into this post was obvious and I agree  with the folks at CopyBlogger that Rajesh Shetty’s post is worth reading.   Of course that he was able to categorize the ways people respond to your blog with alliteration only makes the post that much more interesting. 🙂

I’m going to give you the 9 levels and then send you to the original post.

The 9 Ways Readers Respond to Your Blog

  1. Spam – the reader feels like you are producing spam and marks your post as spam.
  2. Skip – the reader takes one glance and decides to go elsewhere.
  3. Scan – the reader glances over your content and may stop to read an interesting bit.
  4. Stop – the reader finds something that makes them stop and think.
  5. Save – the content is good enough for the reader to save for future use.
  6. Shift – the reader is moved enough that they have a shift in their thinking.
  7. Send – the reader knows someone else who might benefit and sends your post to them.
  8. Spread – the readers respond to your blog post by sharing – they feel that others would benefit from your information
  9. Subscribe – the reader actively wants more of your work.

Obviously you would like for readers to respond to your blog posts at level 9, but anything over level 2 is probably a win.

  1. Well defined. It got me thinking that I will assess my reaction to posts I read based on this categorisation just to see how it goes. So I’m a Stop, Save and possibly even a Shift!

    • Thanks Dot,

I think we all aim for the higher levels! BTW I suggest you go to http://gravatar.com and enter your email and an image. (It’s free) Then you smiling face would appear when you comment. It helps when people want to connect with you.

      Regards,

  2. Thanks so much for these great tips, Hale! HALE YES! (I love that, btw 🙂 ) I’m definitely working on getting people to go from 3 and beyond, that’s for sure !! Very hand list that I will keep in mind while writing. YAY! (p.s. here from UBC 🙂 )

    • Thanks Eyenie,

You may want to take a look at my Day 19. Post It is on how to comment effectively. I certainly learned a few things while researching it.

      Thanks again,
      Dr. Hale

  3. I like “shift”! Those are my favorite blogs to read and it’s what I’d like to offer MY readers. I also like how you got these all to be “S” words. Yikes, that must have taken some doing, but good job! It’s a pretty simple way of thinking about some diverse behaviors. Do we get a brownie point for memorizing the list? 🙂

    • Carol Lynn,

I certainly wish I could take the credit. I gave the reference to the guy who wrote the original post. He said in a footnote that he used to have five S’s and folks like Kiyosaki helped him and now it is up to the Nine!

      Thanks for the comment

  4. Hi Hale,

Of course our goal as bloggers is to never look like we are trying to spam, but rather write valuable content that people are actually looking forward to read.

I am proud to say that some of my readers have actually told me that they are looking forward to read my content and such content even brought me some clients as well. But that takes real work and love of writing and blogging.

    • Thank you Sylviane,
I can see the word “spam” struck a nerve. I think the vast majority of us who write really want to provide useful info. I know I do.

      Thanks Again,
      Dr. Hale

  5. Actually if I can get them anywhere between 4 and 9 I’m doing good. Interesting when you view it this way. Thanks Hale for sharing this from information your got over at Copyblogger.

  7. Howdy! I know this is kinda off topic however , I’d figured I’d ask.
Would you be interested in exchanging links or maybe guest authoring a blog article or vice-versa?
My blog addresses a lot of the same topics as yours and I believe we could greatly benefit from each
other. If you’re interested feel free to send me an e-mail.
