Don’t Break the Chain – Productivity Tip for Overwhelmed Internet Marketers

Don't Break the Chain - Are you Kidding?

Don’t Break the Chain – Are you Kidding?

I’ve got a productivity tip for you – Don’t Break the Chain!  People have attributed this to Jerry Seinfeld.  I don’t know if he originated it or not, but he certainly “spread the word.”

Don’t Break the Chain?  – Are you kidding!!  We normally think of breaking the chains that bind us as a good thing.   And usually that is true.  Today we’ll talk about another kind of chain.  The kind we don’t want to break.

This topic is useful for everyone, but I am aiming specifically at my friends, the internet marketers who are coming online and feeling completely overwhelmed (If this is you, I have an eBook for  overwhelmed and frustrated Internet Marketers.)

Note: My mission is to help Network Marketers who are struggling to move online, especially those buried by overwhelm. Don’t Break the Chain – a Productivity Tip

Those that know me have heard me give this advice for folks who are feeling overwhelmed (excuse the wording, it’s just gotta be that way 🙂 )

“Nibble Nibble.  I can eat the whole damn elephant, if I just Nibble, Nibble.”

It’s a way of saying that slow and steady wins the race.  (Don’t get me wrong, the Internet favors SPEED, however when you are in the formative stages of creating your online kingdom, you just have to expect for it to take time.)

Today’s tip is a variation on this theme.

Here is my New Year’s Calendar, attached to a clipboard so I can hang  it RIGHT WHERE I CAN MISS IT!:

Don't Break the Chain

If you look you will see 5 large X’s forming a chain.  There is one half of an X on the 6th.

Basically you create a Don’t Break the Chain calendar for tasks that you have promised yourself you will do EVERY DAY.  These should typically be things that can be done in a short time period.  For example: “Clean house for 15 minutes”, or “Exercise for at least 20 minutes”, or “Walk the dog for at least a mile.”  The objective is to put an X over the date every time you do your task and “don’t break the chain.”   BTW, you can have multiple “don’t break the chain” calendars.

Here are my rules for the calendar you see here.

  1. At least one blog post every day (I am allowed to make up a day, but not two in a row.)
  2. I excuse myself and do the X in green for days where this is ridiculous; for example I was in the hospital or my wife went in for surgery or I got up at 6:00 and was on an airplane to the far coast all day.
  3. For my calendar, I have broken the X in half.  The top half is WRITING the post and the bottom half is PROMOTING the post.  For purposes of this post, I gave myself credit for finishing the post so you could see a half-X.

Obviously you can make your own rules.  Make it tough, but doable.  You don’t want to be too easy on yourself.

Just seeing your “Don’t Break the Chain” calendar is extra motivation, an there will always be days when we need some extra motivation.

This is super simple AND it is a good use for that free calendar you were going to throw away 🙂   Don’t Break the Chain.

Until next time, you have a Great Day!

  1. Thanks for your insights into this topic. They day the slow and steady wins the race. I know for me the more I do the more it becomes a habit.

  2. Wow, love this Hale!
Personally I printed checklists on labels and stuck them in my diary for the tasks I must complete everyday. I have to say I like your idea even more – what an unmissable visual reminder.

  4. What an interesting idea. I never really thought about managing tasks this way but it’s a great motivational tool. I did something like this not long ago without even realizing it. I started running on the treadmill, 5 miles a day. And I did it for a week… then a month… then a few months. And I said hm, I wonder how long I can keep this up? I hit 495 days in a row before I ended up with a minor injury that kept me off my feet for a few weeks, but it was really cool to do. And the longer I did it, the longer I wanted to do it! I’m going to apply this to my work tasks now that you mentioned it. I can think of plenty of things it would be good for!

  5. Morning Hale. What a great visual using the calendar and placing X’s on each day. I love it. I wonder if there is an online calendar where you could do the same thing. Might be a good app idea for someone.
Thanks for sharing this idea with us.

    • (I’m wrestling my cat for control of the keyboard). Ruth, I know if you Google “Don’t Break the Chain” there are a number of sites that talk about it and talk about calendars you can print out. I didn’t look to see if there was n App. Good Thought. I’ll keep my eyes open.

      Regards,

  6. Definitely Hale, a valuable piece of information. That information helps people slow down and think things through, plan and get to the action. Using the calendar is a great idea. Good work. Thanks.

    • Thank you Barbara,

This is definitely an idea that “stuck with me” since I read it. Most of the tips and tricks come and go just as quickly. This one festered until I had to start doing it!

      Regards,
      Dr. Hale

  7. What a great concept Hale!
I like the way you use the calendar so one can visually see that chain! This is like a daily vision board to me and I’m going to give it a whirl.

I use an appointment calendar for my daily tasks and phone time, but adding this to my desk is a great way of not breaking the chain!

I love to apply new methods, I thank you,

    • You are most welcome Donna. As I just mentioned in another reply. Once you have 5 or 6 X’s, the visual really starts to become compelling. “I put all this effort into it. I’ll be proud of myself when I fill the page!” and so on.

Let me know how it works for you!

      Regards,
      Dr. Hale

  8. Hale,

Great concept about not breaking the chain. I’ve seen many ways, tools tips and tricks to keep on schedule, but this is very simple and user friendly.

I’ve come to realize that creating a blog post is actually not marketing. It’s just a product. The marketing comes from promoting the post. This is just as important and easily confusing for some.

The fact that you give yourself 1/2 credit for creating the post and 1/2 credit for marketing just makes sense.

Thanks for sharing your tip of the day. Looking forward to more great nuggets.

    • Thanks for the comment Ken.

I’ve really become a nut about “If you want results you are only half way there when you click PUBLISH”
I think we are seduced by the “If you SEO your site the visitors will come.” It is kind of like telling a business owner “If you decorate your store nicely, you will have customers.” If that were true we wouldn’t see ads, coupons, give-aways and all the off-line “traffic generation” techniques.

      Regards,
      Hale

  9. It is the simple things that contribute to greatness such as your ‘cross’ idea Hale. Visuals are great, I am a visual person and this type of concept works for me. It is frustrating though when outside influences present themselves.

    • Thanks Dawn,

The “Don’t Break the Chain” visual has been something that stuck in my mind ever since I first read it.

I think it works especially well after you have several X’s in a row. Then the feeling of “I shouldn’t break the string of X’s” starts to have some real power behind it.

      Thanks again for the comment,
      Dr. Hale

  10. Hi Hale,

Wow, I know I couldn’t post everyday as a freelance writer having three blogs of my own, so that’s out of the picture for me, right?

Yes, don’t brake the chain does make sense. For example, I still go on blogs, comment and syndicate on week ends, because not only it prevents me to break this chain, it allows me to do in a more relax way on the week ends.

Having a to do list that you keep in front of you is a must for me.

Thank you for those valuable tips.

    • Sylviane,

I can see a chain that goes down the weekend dates. If you used a smaller calendar that showed several months, it would give you some of the same motivation after a few weeks. Just a thought.

      Thanks,
      Dr. Hale

  11. I use a notebook Hale and I write the tasks down that need to be completed for the day. I don’t leave my desk until they are done.

The calendar is another good idea. I guess whichever works best right.

Thanks for the share… Good advice for those getting started.

    • Thank you Adrienne,

For a lot of folks walking by that calendar is a visual nudge to ge back and do one more thing.

I have a MUST DO list and then TO DO lists. The MUST DOs get done before I finish the day. The TO DOs are more optional.

      Thanks Again,
      Dr. Hale
